Can talking to strangers help you feel less lonely?
Sometimes the easiest person to open up to is someone you don't know. Why random conversations can make your day feel lighter.

Some evenings you want to talk, but you don't want to bother your friends, and you'd rather nobody knew you were feeling down. Talking to a stranger, someone who doesn't know who you are, can be surprisingly easier.
The “stranger on the train” effect
Plenty of people have told a fellow passenger on a bus or a plane things they'd never told their own family. The reason is simple: a stranger has no expectations of you, doesn't judge you by your past, and the encounter ends when the journey does.
Anonymous online chat offers a similar feeling. You can speak honestly without worrying about the relationships you already have.
Small conversations, big difference
Not every conversation needs to be deep. A “how's your day been?”, a song recommendation, a joke: small things like these are enough to remind us that there are other people out there who are also awake, and who also have tiring days.
Making the conversation genuinely pleasant
- Keep expectations light. Not everyone will click with you, and that's normal.
- Share enough, not everything. Talking about your feelings is fine, but keep personal details like your phone number or where you live to yourself.
- Listening is a gift too. Sometimes the other person just needs someone to listen.
- Hold on to the good connections. On Người Lạ Ơi, if you talked for a long time (more than 50 messages), you can send an “Invite to chat again” from Chat history.
When to look for more support
Talking to a stranger can make an evening feel lighter, but it can't replace support from the people close to you or from professionals. If a low mood lasts, affects your sleep or work, or leads to thoughts of harming yourself, talk to someone you trust or reach out to a mental health professional, clinic or hospital. If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number right away (115 in Vietnam).
